Voluntary benefits are additional benefits that are available through an employer but are usually paid by the employee. These benefits range from coverage of life insurance, accident, hospitalization, critical illness, roadside assistance to long term care insurance.

These are usually indemnity policies that provide a specific dollar amount benefit covering a specific event. The benefits are paid according to a schedule. Most times, the underwriting is minimal and the policies are portable (employees may keep them after separation/termination).
